Chemotherapy uses powerful chemicals to kill fast-growing cells in your body or slow their growth. It can be used alone or in combination with other treatments. If the care team believes that chemotherapy is right for you, you meet with a medical oncologist, a doctor who specializes in treating cancer with chemotherapy and other types of drug therapy. Your care team will help you understand what to expect and answer any questions you have. They will ensure you receive the care you need when you need it.
The type of chemotherapy you receive depends on the type of cancer you have. This therapy is available in a variety of forms:
- By mouth (in a pill or liquid you swallow)
- Intravenously (or IV, directly into a vein)
- Topically (through a cream you rub on your skin)
- Injected (into a muscle or under your skin)
Expert Care in Our Oncology Infusion Suite
Our Oncology Infusion Suite, located at Anna Jaques Cancer Center, offers a comfortable environment for people who need chemotherapy and other types of drug therapy. Our caring, highly trained team will do our best to make your experience as easy and comfortable as possible.
The suite offers:
- 12 semi-private treatment chairs.
- An experienced oncology nursing staff who delivers the latest cancer treatments to patients.
- Expert drug preparation by the Anna Jaques pharmacy staff. The team also administers supportive care medicines, pain management and blood transfusions.
Types of Therapy at the Oncology Infusion Suite
Our medical oncology team treats cancer using traditional chemotherapy and several other types of drug therapies.
Biologic Therapy
Biologic therapy can help reduce the side effects of chemotherapy. For example, it can stimulate red blood cell production to prevent anemia (low iron in the blood).
Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy can help treat cancers that rely on hormones for tumor growth, such as certain types of breast and prostate cancers. This therapy can increase, reduce or block hormones.
Immunologic Therapy
Immunologic treatments stimulate the body's own immune system to fight cancer more effectively.
Targeted Therapy
Targeted cancer therapies are drugs or other substances that interfere with specific molecules located on certain cancer cells. These therapies destroy the cancer cells while leaving normal healthy cells alone.
